Spider webs?

[Klaus Günther v. Martinez]

There are a number of pictures, as far as I know all taken in the years 1934 to 1936, showing an antenna (?) looking like a spider web with six corners.
At least "Ancre", "Dédaigneuse" and "Diligent" carried this spider web, but there may have been others.
What was the function?
